I need to choose a new water heater.  But before doing so I decided to do more research on it.  This house is all electric.  so many choices ..........................I must say I feel confused.  what to go for, not a regular water heater I know that for sure, but I saw other choices as to Heat pump water heater, a solar power water heater or a tankless water heater.  do any of you know more about those choices?  the pro and cons of it?  Thanks a bunch.......
Sandy

Ok Shaz, I decided to stay with the regular water heater for now.  I have to learn more about "This Old House"  and decide on which Radiant heat to use as I saw some of the machines will be a water heater and a floor heater using the same element, water.  That will be interesting.  well it has been a roller coaster, some of my friends husband took advise and wanted to install it for me, except IT Leaked, Majorly.  now the new law requires a expansion Tank which they installed the next day and It leaked again.  Not having good days lately......but getting there......I proposed to have a plumber coming but they won't have it (just because of the markup)

a radiant heating system is fantastic if you want to go with a boiler and use it for both water and heating. Thats some serious retro-fitting though.

Let us know what you pick and how it works

IF you can afford it, go for the tankless heater. While initially it will cost you more to purchase and install, you will not have the expense of heating 50 gallons of water all day , every day.

Another reason to go tankless, although not often sited as a reason,,,conventional water heaters CAN and DO explode like rockets and will rip a house apart if they do. ( build up of un-relieved pressure sets it off.) Check this out on a search engine...pretty awesome footage.

A tankless heater WILL NOT explode !

Thanks shaz for your advice.  today is the day I will go an purchase one.  money is not the issue.  the issue is more efficiency......I heard from plumbers that the board fails often.  Honestly I would love to see more on HYDRONIC technology.  it is so so efficient and uses water as a way to heat up areas.....great as a floor heater.  A new technology out there is the heat pump water heater, BUT in order for it to be efficient, it has to be the same temperature as your house 70, not in a closet, knowing that everyone is having their water heater in the basement it wouln't work. Solar I guess is for the areas that have constant sun, such as California or south......not valid for the North East area.....

Hmm I wonder if you actually save energy.  My research shows that the tankless is efficient with gas as a method of use.....

I was kidding.  I would never intend to be rude, was aiming for playfully satirical.  Hence the little smiley faces at the end.  I obviously was not clear enough in my intent.  Please accept  my apology.  I just thought your question had been adequately addressed with several very informative comments, and did not think it would hurt to add a little levity.  Since I had to explain it, it must have been less levity than intended.  Or, as I tell my kids, "You (me, in this case) aren't as funny as you think you are."

Conyers, I did laugh, having seen your sassy humor, but I really laughed even harder when Duch handed you your booty :)  <------- smiley face

D..buy a unit in a store and not from a contractor. All they will do is go to the store and charge you a markup on price.
Water heaters are actually one of the easier things to do yourself in a home. All kinds of plumbing books are around and they all show how to do it.

conyers I do understand your point of vue on that one, but yes, for once it is a subject out of the ordinary.  it is not inapropriate, it is just humble opinions I am seeking as I already done so much research.  and yes for once it is not about playful appliances with a boyfriend........but as blog are here to talk about whatever we want, I think I can ask everyone opinion, not to be taken as an offense.

I'd like to say that, given this is a dating site, a discussion on actual appliances is quite out of order.

Here I was, expecting a blog on Battery Operated Boyfriends, or even bondage tables, and you go and introduce water heaters.

Unless the hot water is being jetted to the body in a Jacuzzi tub, and accompanied by oils, suds or lotions AND a hardbody of the opposite sex, I think it is very inapproprate to discuss here.

Just one Neanderthal's humble opinion. :):)

Ok, it is good information.  You right Lisa, there is so many companies that before I call a contractor I want to get more knowlegeable about it in order to avoid a company selling me their only line of product.  Hmmm what is this hot water heater that gives you water on demand but doesn't store it????? could you find out for me Pat?.  Ah ah Shaz, I won't do it myself that is for sure.  However lately I have been working on my attic and by myself added more insulation on the ceiling.  it has been scary but rewarding, doing the caulking on the outside windows but I don't think I can do the big job. I live in Northern VA so it gets cold here.

I think it is so cool to have all your opinions on it.......

Being that I AM a Union Commercial Plumber i will tell you this...
it all depends on your home, where it is, and what you have available.

The move is to tankless water heaters and they are great. BUT they are expensive to buy, expensive to install ( an installer has to be licensed BY the manufacturing company to do so.)

They DO however, save all that wasted enegry used to keep hot water in giant tanks all the time.
plus you say you have only electricity. Most require a gas hookup. That can be done without too much difficulty IF there is a natural gas line in the vicinity .

Some places, California included, has an energy initiative that gives rebates and tax credits for those who install Solar Powered systems. It can really help with the cost.

IF you live where it is sunny, solar is a good alternative.

Somehow I didnt see bribri as the kind to get his hands dirty.

IF you try to remove the old one yourself,,
TURN OFF the water of both sides FIRST.
get a hose and attach it to the drain tap on the heater and empty it of all water. Plan where this water will go.
Disconnect the electrical source.
Unscrew the water connections at the top. There will be some spillage of water.
Once the tank is empty and disconnected, it IS light but ungainly to move around. Get a dolly and tip it from the top when moving it.
Have fun

make a sudy of convential electrical/gas tank heaters 55 gal etc. The thermostat demands electricity when it loses temperature......just sitting there it gets cooler...Check out others.. solar, heat pumps..
fairly new is the on demand ones...turn on the demand and it heats as needed...no storage issues....more expensive units but in the long run maybe better in the monthly bills...just a thought...I still have my tank electric one which I cut power if I leave for more than a day....just one view

There is a newer type of water heater they've been advertising which produces hot water on demand, but doesn't store it. Supposed to be energy efficient. Rinnai is a brand I've some good things about. Otherwise 50 gallons minimum.

I'm not very well informed on this stuff, Duch....but there is that water heater that gives you hot water on demand.  No waiting when you turn on the faucet for the cold to turn to hot.  I have no idea the name of it, but if I were going for a new water heater, that's what I'd look into.  A friend of mine got one recently and she said that overall it was less expensive than anything else she could have installed.
